China has officially handed over the first batch of 100-thousand bags of emergency food aid to Kenya.

Speaking during the handover ceremony in Nairobi, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Liu Xianfa said the consignment of rice is part of the 450,000 bags that Beijing has pledged, with the aid amounts to $22.5million.

The remaining batches will arrive between July and August.

Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Special Programmes Josepheta Oyiela Mukobe has thanked China for coming to the aid of Kenyans.

Kenya was hart hit by a lengthy drought that prompted the government to declare a national disaster earlier in the year.

The Chinese government and other Chinese organizations have in the past donated aid to help curb the effects of the drought in Kenya.
