Read < 1 minute

The summit is expected to discuss the current security challenges and implementation of the 2015 African union brokered peace deal, President Kiir is invited to be part of the meeting however, Juba says Kiir will instead send a delegation to the summit.

Intergovernmental authority on development (IGAD) the East African regional body that mediated the peace deal for nearly two years says implementation of the peace agreement is lagging behind but Juba disagrees

The unity government says it’s making efforts to bring peace back to the country.

But insecurity is on the increase and a number of armed groups who do not belong to either Kiir’s government or opposition leader Riek Machar have emerged in South Sudan from 2015 further complicating security situation in the country.

IGAD says it wants to hold the summit to once again collectively pass a message to the warring parties in South Sudan that there is no military solution to the current political situation in the country and persuade the parties to use dialogue and fully implement the 2015 peace agreement.
