AU deploys election observers to Lesotho ahead of June 3 vote

The African Union has deployed an election observation team to Lesotho to monitor the country’s poll set to be conducted on June 3.

Upon the invitation of the Independent Election Commission, the chairperson of the AU Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat deployed the AU Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) to witness the National Assembly elections in the kingdom, according to a statement from the pan-African bloc.

The mission will be led by former Mozambique president Joaquim Chissano.

The team comprises of 26 observers drawn from members of the Permanent Representatives Committee of AU, Pan African Parliament (PAP), Election Management Bodies and civil society organizations.

The AUEOM, which is deployed in Lesotho from May 28 to June 8, has joined the AU election expert mission which has been in the country since May 13.

The AUEOM makes an independent, objective and impartial assessment of the elections, and offers recommendations for improvement of future elections that will contribute to the consolidation of democratic governance, peace and stability in the country.

The AUEOM will release its preliminary findings of the electoral process on June 5 at a press conference in Maseru.
