Saturday is the first day of the Holy Month of Ramadan to Muslim faithful around the world.

Throughout this period, Muslims will pray, fast and recite the Quran, as they renew their relationship with God.

Somalia being one of the countries with a wide-following of Islam, many residents have gathered in market places, in preparation of the celebrations. However, businessmen take advantage of the holy month of Ramadan to make profits, as they strive to meet the demands of increased customers.

Ahmed Osman Wehlie, a trader in Mogadishu told CGTN Africa that he hoped this month could bring peace and prosperity for the Somali people.

“For the sake of the holy month of Ramadan, I hope prosperity for the Somali people; I want my people to forgive each other, and I would like those harming us to stop it.

“Our Somali youth please stop immigrating, your country can offer good opportunities, and you can take advantage of your country products”

Abdirahman Ali Jimale, a local resident of Mogadishu, was in the market buying food in preparation for the holy month.

“We came out to prepare for the holy month of Ramadan, we are in the market buying food and other stuff we need during Ramadan; according to our Islamic teachings, I hope the Somali people take advantage of this holy month,” he told CGTN Africa.
