As the continent prepares to mark the 54th anniversary of Africa Day later this week, there are calls for nations to become more independent.

African countries are being urged to stand up for themselves and harness the vast resources available. Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has previously called for a return to the African Union’s predecessor, the Organisation for African Unity. He maintains that dependence on the international donor community is not sustainable.

This year the AU has pledged to invest in youth. And Zimbabwe is among the countries putting such strategies in place.

“The main focus was to be economic independence to stop the dependence on our former colonial masters in terms of our economic development and our economic direction,” said Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, Minister, Foreign Affairs of Zimbabwe.
