Sweden’s top prosecutor says she’s dropping an investigation into a rape claim against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
The decision was taken after prosecutors concluded that “at this point, all possibilities to conduct the investigation are exhausted”, Sweden’s director of public prosecutions, Marianne Ny, said on Friday, the Guardian reports.
The case has dragged on almost seven years. It means the outspoken WikiLeaks leader no longer faces sex crime allegations in Sweden.
Although British police say he’s still wanted in England for jumping bail in 2012, It’s not clear if that will change now that the Swedish charges have been dropped.
Assange has been living in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London for nearly five years. He’s worried he may face indictment in the United States for his role in WikiLeaks’ disclosure of classified information.
