14 people have died in various part of the Kwale county in the coast province of Kenya according to the Standard.
The people were swept away by heavy rains and floods creating havoc in the area since Monday; among the dead are two adults and three pupils according to the Kwale governor Salim Mvurya.
More than 1500 families in the region have been displaced and affected by the floods are in need of relief food and shelter.
Houses have been submerged in the floods with the continuous rain causing flash floods and swelling drainage piling up water.
On Wednesday hudreds of people and vehicles were stranded at the the Likoni harbor unable to cross to Mombasa city due to flooding. At least over 1,600 families displaced by floods in Mombasa county. Mombasa County government says it urgently needs Sh20 billion (193,423,800USD) to address the flood crisis caused by heavy rains in the region.
“To overcome floods during the rainy season across the county, a 400 kilometre drainage system needs to be constructed,”said Taufiq Balala, the county transport and infrastructure executive officer.
The Kenya Red Cross has reported that over 5,000 people have been affected by floods in the Taita Taveta County that borders Tanzania. The floods came in from Tanzania. The government has provided food relief in the region.
