U.S cuts back on financial aid to Kenya’s Ministry of Health

United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has suspended funding for activities by the Kenyan Ministry of Health departments.
According to a notice issued by the US agency, there are unspecified conditions which the implementing partners have not met for some for some programs, reports the Star.
Funding for domestic, international travel and activities undertaken during such trips like training, conferences, site visits and conventions; meetings, events, and workshops as well as the printing of communication material such as brochures, training materials, and guidance documents have been suspended.
“Surveillance and service delivery will also continue receiving donor cash from USAID,” said Brian Woody, USAID Kenya and East Africa Contracting Officer.
He further added that funding for procurement of commodities and equipment related to life-saving treatment, prevention, outbreak or emergency response.
Woody did not give specific reasons for the mass suspensions although the move could likely be in line with US President Donald Trump’s proposal to cut aid.
US partners with the Ministry of Health with interventions on nutrition, family planning, and maternal and child health, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and strengthening health programs.
