Troops in Nigeria have rescued 1,623 people held captive by Boko Haram.
In an operation to clear out Boko Haram from Jarawa community in Kala Balge Local Government Area of Borno State, soldiers released over 1000 residents and killed 21 terrorists.
A statement from the Army spokesman, Brigadier General Sani Usman, said troops of Three Battalion, 22 Brigade on Operation Lafiya Dole, had launched an offensive on a suspected terrorist location based on a tip-off, according to Premium Times.
The soldiers reportedly overcame heavy fire at Jarawa village, before moving on to clear out the insurgents from nine other neighbouring settlements who had faced previous conflict.
Upon taking control of the village, troops recovered weaponry: three AK-47 rifles; 36 hand grenades; 12 cutlasses; and four motorcycles.
Those rescued have been escorted to Rann Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, whilst all the children have been vaccinated.
The army reported no unit casualties.
