Mafia Island may sound like a haven for organized crime or a spinoff from The Sopranos.
In reality however, the Tanzanian island offers one of the most spectacular landscapes in East Africa. The name “Mafia” is said to have been coined by Sultan of Zanzibar Seyyid Said from the Swahili words, ‘Mahali Pa Afya’ , meaning a healthy dwelling place. You just need a little nerve to enjoy it.
