In recent months a new attraction has been catching on in one of Johannesburg’s poorest neighborhoods.

Guided culinary tours of Alexandra township are now on offer and they’re proving to be a delightful hit and an excellent source of income for the community.

Though Alexandra is considered to be one of Johannesburg most notorious townships with high levels of crime and poverty, one entrepreneur took it upon himself to change its reputation through the culinary tours that set out to highlight this township′s culture.

“We didn’t like the way our continent was portrayed internationally and we thought the best way to create new perceptions is by enabling people to experience what makes the continent unique,” said Daniel Adidwa, co-founder of Tour 2.0, a tourism company that focuses on very unique and cultural experiences.

The tours basically focus on the different types of foods that one can find in Alexandra.

This project attracts many people from all around Johannesburg, South Africa and the entire world to visit Alexandra. The main aim is to shrug off the stigma that the township is a hub of crime and poverty.

Locals in Alexandra savour this moment very much. They never thought they would get to see tourists flock the once dangerous town, but it is exactly what is happening.

With the commitment put into this project, Alexandra is fast growing into a top tourist destination in South Africa, and one that anyone visiting the country should make time for.
