South African FM Pravin Gordhan not disturbed by sacking rumours
South Africa’s embattled Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is not letting talk of a possible sacking deter him from his duties, saying he was focused on restoring faith in Africa’s most industrialized economy.
Gordhan spoke to journalists in Johannesburg soon after landing from London, following orders issued to him by the presidency to cut short his tour of the US and UK, and return to South Africa.
Gordhan however revealed that he was able to meet 50 investors while in London.
The presidency said the order by President Jacob Zuma to have Gordhan return to the country immediately was because Zuma had not authorized the trip.
Rumours are rife in the country that Gordhan is set to get sacked from his position.
When put to task to answer the sacking rumours, Gordhan simply answered by saying, “let’s wait and see.”
South African assets, including the rand, have fallen sharply since he was told to return to South Africa.
Gordhan was appointed as the Finance Minister in December 2015, replacing David van Rooyen.
