Tanzania to send 500 doctors to Kenya to help with shortage

Tanzania has granted Kenya request to send 500 medical doctors to the neighbouring country to assist in addressing the medics’ shortage and also mitigate effects of just ended Doctors’ strike according to a report by the Citizen.

President John Magufuli declared Tanzania’s readiness to send the doctors after discussions with Kenya ministry of health officials sent by the Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, according to a statement issued by the state house.

Kenya is facing a shortage of medical personnel after a doctors’ strike that went for almost three months. According to Kenya’s Minister for Health, Dr. Cleopa Mailu, the government of Kenya has realized that the problem cannot be solved by depending on doctors who study within Kenya and sourcing for services abroad has been seen as a short term solution to the problem.

The contingency from Kenya told President Magufuli that the government of Kenya is ready to pay 500 doctors and provide them with houses.

Tanzania’s Ministry of Health and Community Development, Minister Ms. Ummy Mwalimu told the Kenyan counterparts that Tanzania has many good unemployed doctors.

“Let me appeal to all doctors in the country who have no job at the moment to apply for these posts” said the Minister
