President Uhuru Kenyatta to deliver last State of the Nation address before August poll
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta will on Wednesday deliver his last State-of-the-Nation address before the country’s August general elections.
Political temperatures in the East African nation are already on the rise ahead of the poll in which Uhuru will seek a second and final term in the Presidency.
Uhuru is expected to use this opportunity to drum up support for his re-election bid by highlighting his government’s scorecard over the last four years.
This year’s address comes on the back of a 100-day doctor’s strike, as well as a lectures strike.
Local media outlet The Star is reporting that opposition Members of Parliament are planning to boycott the president’s State-of-the-Nation address, citing failure to deliver on his promises and his recent outburst on opposition leaders.
In the last address, opposition MPs caused chaos in the chambers, blowing whistles as the president read out his speech. Security was forced to bundle them out of the house.
Main opposition leaders in the country are expected to field one candidate against Uhuru in the August election, after they formed a unity coalition.
