Former South African president Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is “absolutely fine”, her spokesperson Victor Dlamini said on Friday following her admission into hospital.
Doctors decided on Wednesday to keep the 80-year-old former first lady in hospital after she underwent a routine checkup.
“I was with her and she’s absolutely fine,” spokesman Victor Dlamini told television broadcaster eNCA.
The anti-apartheid veteran spent several weeks in hospital last year for back surgery.
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is famed for her relentless campaign to have Nelson Mandela released from prison, and for the rights of black South Africans, undergoing detention, banishment and arrest.
It is still however unclear if she will be discharged from hospital on Friday.
