Mauritania to change national flag to show fight against colonialism

Mauritania may have a new flag soon, incorporating the red color to represent the blood shed during the fight to end colonial rule from France.
The country located in the Maghreb region of western Africa gained its Independence from the French in 1960.
Members of Parliament in the nation’s lower house on Thursday voted to make the changes to the flag.

The current one has a crescent and star symbolizing the importance of Islam to the country, but lawmakers from the ruling majority felt the nation’s independence struggle was not adequately represented.
The lawmakers also voted to get rid of the parliament’s upper chamber.
The changes will however still have to be considered by the Senate.
