Tanzania pledges to increase support for women
The government of Tanzania has pledged to support and campaign for the welfare of women’s societies in the country as the number of women in senior leadership positions decrease in the government, according to a report by The Citizen.
Recent government data has shown that the number of women holding key decision making position has fallen. The women to men ratio in the government are 28 to 72. Analysts say that Tanzania is dragging its feet in attaining a 50 – 50 women to men ratio at work by 2030.
Tanzania’s Minister of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children Ummy Mwalimu said that a majority of women in the East African nation are still subjected to different forms of gender based violence and do not access many of the statutory rights.
“Women are crucial to any social economic development of a nation. We will continue supporting women from across the country to promote and protect their rights” the minister added
The minister further said that the government has made strides in empowering women financially with over 86,000 women receiving loans from various financial institutions. The government is working towards creating a good environment to ensure more women can access loans to initiate own businesses and small scale factories.
“I believe that we can attain the 50-50 ratio by 2030 if we invest in education and enable women to also contests leadership positions. I think the President has shown his desire to include more women in his government by picking Samia Suluhu as the vice President.” Said the Minister
