
Millions reported stolen in a heist in South Africa International Airport
Men dressed as police men at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa are said to have stolen an alleged 24 million rands (1.9 million USD) yesterday evening according to local media reports.
The thieves masquerading as police were armed and in a marked police vehicle.
A high-level investigation by the Hawks, the police, and the Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa) and other law enforcement agencies is underway following the robbery.
“The robbery took place in the restricted section of the cargo area of the airport where cargo was being prepared to be transported on an SAA aircraft,” said South African Airways Spokesperson Tlali Tlali
According to Jacaranda fm, The Hawks’ Hangwani Mulaudzi says they can’t confirm how much was stolen but that they are working alongside the Airports Company of South Africa in establishing the exact details of what happened.
“The investigation is underway and we are not at liberty to disclose what transpired as it might influence the investigation,” he says.
According to Times Live, the heist occurred when “police” stopped GuardForce personnel as they were transporting the money to an awaiting flight bound for London on Tuesday night.
Airports Company South Africa’s O.R. Tambo International Airport said in a short statement the robbery occurred at approximately 7.45pm
“No shots were fired and no injuries have been reported. The robbers fled‚” it said in a statement.
