South African authorities say the deportation of undocumented migrants has nothing to do with the recent outbreak of violence and protests against foreigners.

Nigerian media outlets have reported that 97 citizens accused of committing various offences were sent home from South Africa on Monday.

The South African Department of Home Affairs however says Nigerians haven’t been singled out as hundreds of undocumented foreign nationals have been deported.

South Africa has experienced several protests against foreign nationals in the past two weeks, that resulted in looting of shops owned by migrants.

The protesters are demanding that illegal foreigners be deported with immediate effect.

They blame them for various social ills.

Home Affairs Department has admitted that illegal migrants present a challenge in this country.
