Adama Barrow to be sworn in for the second time as The Gambia’s president
New Gambian President Adama Barrow is expected to be inaugurated for a second time in a ceremony to be attended by West African leaders.
The ceremony which will also mark 52 years of the West African country’s independence will be held in the capital Banjul.
Barrow won elections in December, defeating longstanding ruler Yahya Jammeh who had refused to step down despite his electoral defeat. Regional troops had to go in to entice Jammeh to leave.
Adama Barrow is only the third president in the history of The Gambia and he comes into power with a promise of a new dawn for the country, which was ruled with an iron fist by Yahya Jammeh.
Many political prisoners have already been freed and The Gambia is set to rejoin international institutions such as the International Criminal Court and the Commonwealth.
