World’s first passenger drone to start flying in Dubai

A drone without a pilot that will transport individuals through the air will begin flying over Dubai’s skyline from July according to the head of the city’s Roads and Transportation Agency in the country, who made the announcement at the World Government Summit.

The drone, Chinese model eHang 184, is capable is carrying one passenger with the weight of up to 100 kg (220 pounds) on a 30 minute flight. It can speed up to 100 miles per hour (160 kilometres per hour) and can fly 31 miles (50km) on a single battery charge according to the report.

The auto-pilot drone that has already had successful test flights is controlled a command centre, the passenger only enters the destination on a touch screen inside the drone. Passengers can’t take control of the drone even in an emergency.

According to the manufacturer, Ehang, the drone is designed  to complete its flight even if one propeller fails. It also incorporates the “Ehangen fail-safe system”, which means in the event of a malfunction the drone will immediately land in the nearest available area.
