Tanzania will seek compensation for tens of thousands of people who were allegedly starved, tortured and killed by German soldiers as they sought to put down rebellious tribes in the colonial era.
German forces are accused of crimes including starvation following the famous Maji Maji tribal revolt between 1905 and 1907.
Germany was Tanzania’s colonial master from the late 1880s to 1919.
In an interview with DW, Hussein Mwinyi, the Minister of Defense and National Service of Tanzania, said that the government is prepared to ask the German government to compensate those who were affected by the Maji Maji war.
Mwinyi said the Tanzanian government will follow in the example of other African states that have sought compensation from their colonial masters, including Kenya and Namibia.
The minister also said the compensation, if received, would be directed to the families of those who lost their lives during the German colonial era and the surviving victims of the atrocities.
