Egypt’s veteran goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary is on the verge of making history with The Pharaohs should they win the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations tournament taking place in Gabon.

El-Hadary was the hero as his side beat a spirited Burkina Faso in a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw in the tournament’s first semi-final game yesterday.

The 44-year old stopper saved two penalties to see his side to the final that will be played on Sunday.

El-Hadary already made history by becoming the oldest player to ever play at an AFCON tournament, and may get more space in the history books should his side win the Sunday showdown.

Should Egypt win, the goalkeeper will have won a record fifth AFCON title.

Coming into the Gabon tournament, The Pharaohs had missed the last three AFCON editions, before which they had won three consecutive ones.

At the start of the Gabon event, the North Africans were not regarded as favourites, but have proven everyone wrong.

They have conceded just one goal in their road to the final, coming against Burkina Faso on Wednesday.

The Pharaohs will now play the winner of today’s second semi-final game that will see Cameroon take on Ghana.
