Miner trapped underground emerges alive after 80-hour rescue effort in Tanzania
Against the odds and with barely enough energy to move – a Tanzanian miner walks free, after four days trapped underground.
The frantic rescue effort began after the mine collapsed on 14 Tanzanians and a Chinese man.
A British mining company led the operation, along with local rescuers. But after 48 hours the odds looked grim.
They then faced a tough decision, whether to drill to find the men’s location. But once the drilling rod went down, they finally heard a noise.
There was another 48 hours of digging – some of it with picks and spades.
And then they emerged, unharmed. Shane Blom was part of the rescue effort, and it has made him think.
This is not the first accident of its kind in Tanzania. Six miners were trapped for more than 40 days in 2015 after a similar accident.
Only four of them survived.
