Somalia has been named the most corrupt nation in Africa and the whole world, beating off competition from South Sudan to that shameful position.
In the just released global Corruption Perceptions Index 2016 by Transparency International, Somalia, South Sudan and North Korea beat all other nations in the world to be ranked as most corrupt.
Transparency International noted that these most corrupt countries are plagued by untrustworthy and badly functioning public institutions like the police and judiciary. Even where anti-corruption laws are on the books, in practice they’re often skirted or ignored.
African nations preformed dismally in the index, with only 16 managing to be ranked in the top 100 least corrupt nations worldwide.
The continent had five nations in the top ten most corrupt nations, with Guinea-Bissau, Libya, Sudan joining Somalia and Sudan.
At the other end of the ranking, Botswana was named the least corrupt nation in Africa, coming at position 35 worldwide. Cape Verde came second, with Mauritius and Rwanda tying at third.
