Gambia’s Central Bank deposits are “intact”, a spokesperson for President Adama Barrow said on Monday, one day after the new leader said the country’s coffers were empty.

Barrow on Sunday said that it appeared his exiled predecessor Yahya Jammeh had looted state resources after his election defeat.

An adviser to the new president then later said Jammeh had withdrawn the equivalent of over $11.5 million before he flew out of the country as West African troops were poised to remove him.

According to World Bank figures, this money represents 1.2 percent of The Gambia’s GDP.

“There had been information to the public about the central bank. It was of particular concern but the inspector general (of) police told me that everything is intact,” Reuters reports Halifa Sallah to have said at a news conference in Gambia’s capital Banjul.

Jammeh flew out of the small West African country late on Saturday after ECOWAS troops piled pressure on him to hand over power.

He reportedly flew to Equatorial Guinea.
