Southampton’s Sofiane Boufal out of Morocco’s AFCON team with injury
Southampton’s Moroccan midfielder Sofiane Boufal has withdrawn from the Africa Cup of Nations tournament that kicks off on Saturday with an injury.
The 23-year-old left the Moroccan training camp on Sunday, although details of the injury are yet to be released.
“Boufal has left after examination of his injury showed he would not be capable of playing,” the national team said in a statement.
Boufal’s injury now piles more pressure on the Moroccan team that has already lost the services of midfielders Younes Belhanda, Oussame Tannane, as well as Watford’s Nordin Amrabat to injuries.
Morocco will play their last friendly against Finland on Tuesday before heading to Gabon where their first AFCON match will be on January 16 against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
No replacement for Boufal has been named yet.
