Rwanda is positioning itself as an ICT hub and leader in the East African region as well as the continent. By the end of 2015, more than a quarter of the country was connected to the Internet and many government services are available online. But the best example of the country embracing ICT is the free Wi-Fi in many parts of Kigali.
Rwanda’s capital, kigali paints a scene of lush hillsides and quiet, winding streets. But underneath this seeming peace and order is an emerging tech savvy space. Scattered across its serene boulevards are wireless hotspots, where locals and visitors can access free wifi at the airport, in its cafes and hotels and even on public transport.
CGTN visited Kigali’s 4G square where 4G services, still out of reach for many African nations, are offered free of charge.
Rwanda’s government says this is just the first step, it plans to provide similar services in the city’s markets, public buildings, schools and in the long term the entire country.
