African Americans celebrate 50 years of ‘Kwanzaa’

Back in the mid-1960s, African-American Professor Maulana Karenga came up with the idea of the holiday Kwanzaa, derived from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” which means first fruits of the harvest.”

Celebrated as an alternative to Christmas 50 years ago, the holiday is designed to highlight African-American community values. Take a look!
