The government of Sao Tome and Principe has reportedly cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan, a move that has been welcomed by China.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Hua Chunying said the African island nation’s decision to end relations with Taiwan marked its “return to the right track of the one-China principle.”

The “One China” principle notes that there is only one China in the world, and that Taiwan is a part of it.

The Foreign Ministry emphasized that China is ready to develop friendly and cooperative relations with all countries on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and the one-China principle.

Resolution 2758 was adopted in October 1971 by the 26th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, making it clear that the Chinese government is the sole legitimate government representing China.

The Resolution also recognized that the one-China principle is the general consensus of the international community.
