Tanzania is set to begin the construction of a fertilizer plant that costs more than one million trillion dollars with a production capacity of 3,850 tonnes daily.
“…we are set to begin construction in the first quarter of next year,” Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Adelhelm Meru, told the Daily News
The mega fertilizer factory expected to one of the largest fertilizer investments in Africa is an investment in partnership with Europe and Asia. It is also the single largest fertilser project in the East African nation and three times bigger than the Dangote Cement Plant.
Tanzania’s Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr Philip Mpango, asked the government to reduce the natural gas cost to allow the plant to be constructed as soon as possible.
The plant which will boost Tanzania’s agricultural sector has been attributed to President Magufuli’s industrialization drive.
The fertilizer plant will be at Southern Tanzania adjacent to the offshore gas finds, since natural gas is one of the hydrocarbon sources of ammonia which is a key fertilizer ingredient.
