Zambian transport authorities enforce ban on night travels
Zambian transport authorities have begun implementing a law banning the movement of public service vehicles at night, with the aim of curbing road accidents.
The Zambian Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) on Tuesday said the law restricting the movement of public service vehicles at night came into effect on Monday.
All public transport operators and members of the public have since been reminded to adhere to the new rules.
RTSA said that those who failed to adhere to the rules would be jailed for three months as punishment.
Among vehicles not allowed to move between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. include locally and foreign registered public service vehicles, passenger and goods vehicles, it added.
The road safety agency noted that sufficient evidence gathered have indicated that both passengers and goods public vehicles contributed significantly to road traffic crashes occurring at night.
