South Sudan government says proposed arms embargo will derail a peace efforts
South Sudan’s government is warning that a proposed arms embargo proposed by the United States could have dire consequences on the country.
Officials say imposing sanctions will weaken the South Sudanese government, and give the upper hand to rebel groups.
The government reiterated its commitment to implementing the peace agreement signed last year, saying any sanctions should not be imposed on the government, but rather those who have declared war on South Sudan.
The country is currently building a national army and is worried that an arms embargo will jeopardize its plans.
There’s been increased violence in parts of South Sudan, forcing many to flee their homes and seek shelter in UN compounds or in neighbouring countries.
