South African lawmakers to debate a motion of no confidence in President Zuma
The South African lawmakers will be debating a motion of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma in the National Assembly on Thursday.
South Africa opposition party Democratic Alliance (DA) brought the motion to the parliamentary speaker to have the motion debated for a second time this year seeking to evict the President from office.
DA called on the ruling party African National Congress (ANC) to heed to South Africans calls to have Zuma removed from office. However ANC has said that it will not be supporting the motion to impeach the President.
“We respect the constitutionally-enshrined right of any parliamentary party to table a motion of no confidence in the president as a tool of parliamentary oversight and accountability….. However the motions by the DA have become ritualistic practices founded on spurious allegations and narrow political motives rather than substance. Since the start of the current term of Parliament, which is just over two years old, a total of seven motions have been tabled by the opposition,” the party said in a statement from the office of the ANC chief whip, Jackson Mthembu
According to the Daily Maverick at least five motions of no confidence in President Zuma have been tabled by the opposition parties since 2010.
