South African football coach Shakes Mashaba has labelled Bafana Bafana’s Saturday game against Senegal as a must-win match.

Speaking before the team’s departure to Polokwane where it will play the Teranga Lions in its second qualifier of the World Cup, Mashaba says they’ll have to beat Senegal who top their group on three points.

South Africa is currently tied with Burkina Faso on a point each.

To boost their prospects of qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Russia, South Africa will be aiming to overcome Senegal, knowing that a win will propel it to the driving seat of the group’s qualification.

Having already failed to clinch a spot in the 2017 African Cup of Nations, Bafana Bafana may be under pressure to prove their worth in their quest to appear in the world showpiece.

With only group winners qualifying for the 2018 tournament to be staged in Russia, Mashaba says their plan is to beat Senegal so they can move to the top of the group standings.

“It is a must win for us because they are sitting at the top of the log with three points and we are behind them with one point, the best thing to do is to beat them so we unseat them and then sit on top of the log.”

In the other group D match, Burkina Faso will face off with Cape Verde, both seeking a first win in the qualification matches.
