South Africans remember pop icon Brenda Fassie 12 years. Netizens from the southern parts of Africa took the internet to pay tribute to the legendary musician who would have been celebrating her 52nd birthday today.
Brenda Fassie died after a cocaine overdose in 2004 at the age of 39.
The music icon was born in Cape Town to a pianist who inspired her career choice. She was in a band known as Brenda and the Big Dudes before her solo career.
Brenda got international claim for her top hit song Vulindela among other songs.
Mabrr as Fassie was called by her fans was voted 17th in a list of Top 10 Great South Africans and later awarded a SAMA lifetime achievement award – posthumously.
A life-size bronze statue of Fassie was erected in her honour outside the Bassline music venue in Johannesburg’s Newtown art district in March 2006.
