Nigeria’s senate rejects motion to discuss President Buhari’s $30bn loan request
Nigeria’s senate has rejected a motion about whether they should consider a request from President Muhammadu Buhari to approve a $30 billion loan, BBC reports.
The president last week said he wanted the money for investment, especially in infrastructure.
The requested loan amounts to much more than the federal government’s entire budget for 2016.
This is however not a rejection of the loan request as the discussions had not reached that point. Rather, it was about whether the request should be considered.
The senators reportedly rejected the motion on a technicality.
The president can still resubmit his loan plan.
