China to send 925 peacekeepers to Sudan, South Sudan in December
China will send 925 peacekeepers to South Sudan and the Darfur region of Sudan in December 2016 for one year on a United Nations peacekeeping mission.
A 700-member infantry battalion, the third batch to be deployed in the South Sudanese capital, Juba, will arrive in mid-December, while an engineering regiment consisting of 225 troops, the 13th batch to be sent to the Darfur region of Sudan, will arrive in late December.
China now has more than 2,000 peacekeepers serving on UN missions in nine regions, including South Sudan, the Darfur region of Sudan, Mali and Liberia.
In July, two Chinese peacekeepers were killed and five others injured in clashes in Juba.
Forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and those loyal to former first vice president Riek Machar engaged in a five-day gun-fight that left around 400 people dead, with thousands others fleeing to neighbouring countries.
