Tanzania has the lowest mobile data cost in Africa, according to data released by #DataMustFall a gig costs 0.89 US dollars compared to South Africa’s which costs 5.26 US dollars reports the Daily News.

Tanzania low cost mobile data is attributed to a competitive telecommunications industry and 4G LTE network provided by the state owned Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL).

“TTCL came with very affordable prices after launching the 4G LTE network last year which forced other providers to lower theirs,” Mr Kazaura, former TTCL Chief Executive Officer, told the ‘Daily News’ in an interview

Intense competition has led to low prices and created a potential for further growth of the service penetration. Since there is a 20 percent penetration in the East African nation while an average 45 to 50 percent is recorded globally.

Internet World Stats gives the internet users in Tanzania at an estimated number of 7,590,794 as at 30 of June, this year, which is equivalent of 14.5 per cent of the total population according to the Daily News.

“The opportunities in the market (internet) are still immense,” Said Mr. Kazaura
