In response to criticism by his wife, Nigerian President has described the First Lady Aisha Buhari’s place to being in the kitchen.

On a visit to Germany, he said: “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room.”

President Buhari was reacting to his wife’s comments during a joint press briefing with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who seemed to glare at him.

Aisha Buhari had said she may not back her husband at the next election unless he got a grip on his government.

The First Lady, a businesswoman and activist, while speaking to the BBC Hausa service said that her husband did not know most of the officials he had appointed, and that many owed their positions to the influence of “a few people”.

“The president does not know 45 out of 50 of the people he appointed and I don’t know them either, despite being his wife of 27 years,” she said.

“Some people are sitting down in their homes folding their arms only for them to be called to come and head an agency or a ministerial position.”

She said that her husband had yet to tell her if he would go for another term in office.

“He is yet to tell me but I have decided, as his wife, that if things continue like this up to 2019, I will not go out and campaign again and ask any woman to vote like I did before. I will never do it again,” Aisha said.

Responding to questions by reporters, Mr Buhari said that having run for president three times and having succeeded at the fourth attempt, he could “claim superior knowledge over her”.

The president’s remarks on the kitchen and “the other room” have been met with outrage on social media with many criticizing his thoughts on the role of women.
