Spanish football giants FC Barcelona have revealed plans to establish a football academy in Lagos, Nigeria.

This will be the Blaugrana’s first academy in Africa once complete.

Officials from the club say Barcelona plan to avail their presence in Lagos because of its status as the fastest growing megacity.

The 24-times La Liga champions have academies in Europe, America, China and Canada among other regions, but none in Africa.

Nigeria is excited to have been selected to have the academy.

Barcelona’s has over the years relied on its academy to produce some of its finest players, including five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi alongside greats like Andrés Iniesta and Xavier “Xavi” Hernández.

Barcelona are currently on a defence of their La Liga title, and are hoping to make it three Liga titles from three seasons.
