U.S. blacklists DRC Army General and Kabila advisor

Read < 1 minute

The US Treasury has placed two top allies of DRC President Joseph Kabila on its sanctions blacklist.

They are Gabriel Amisi Kumba, a commander of the DRC’s armed forces, and John Numbi, one of Kabila’s advisors. Both men are said to be responsible for human rights violations by repressing opposition demonstrations against Kabila running for a third term in office. Human rights activits have welcomed the sanctions.

They say taking strong action could put further pressure on Kabila to abide by the constitutional requirement to step down at the end of his term.
