Egyptian authorities arrest four crew members of killer boat
Egyptian authorities have arrested four crew members of the boat that capsized off its coast in the Mediterranean Sea carrying almost 600 migrants, killing 43.
The boat sank on Wednesday off Burg Rashid, a village in Egypt’s northern Beheira province where the sea and the Nile meet.
Rescue workers have so far saved 169 people, meaning that the death toll could hit several hundred.
Egyptian prosecutors ordered that the arrested crew members be detained for four days as investigations are carried out.
The boat had been carrying Egyptian, Sudanese, Eritrean and Somali migrants, officials said.
It was not clear where the boat was heading to, though officials believe that it was headed for Italy.
More and more people have been trying to cross to Italy from the African coast over the summer months, particularly from Libya, where people-traffickers operate with relative impunity, but also from Egypt.
