The Democratic Republic of Congo’s leading opposition figure Moise Katumbi has called for the imposition of international sanctions against security officials responsible for the deaths of protests in two days of anti-government demonstrations.

Katumbi had declared his candidature for the Presidency in the vote scheduled for November.

The vote is however unlikely to take place in November as scheduled after the country’s electoral body said it needed more time to prepare for it.

The opposition has accused President Kabila of trying to delay the polls in order to stay longer in power. He is not eligible to run for another term in office as he is serving the second term of the two-terms allowed by the constitution.

Katumbi said that the sanctions are required to bring an end to the killings in the country.

“Without sanctions, they will continue killing people like mosquitoes,” he said.

“President Kabila is just fooling everyone. He doesn’t want to go. He wants to remain in power and is killing his own people,” he added.
