China sends medical assistance to earthquake hit areas in Tanzania

China has sent at least five doctors to northwest Tanzania to assist in saving lives of the survivors of the earthquake that left 17 people dead and many others injured according to a statement released by the Chinese embassy in Tanzanian coastal city of Dar es Salaam.

The doctors included specialists in women, children in addition to a surgeon and a general doctor according to the statement issued by the Office of Public Diplomacy and Press Section of the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania as per Xinhua’s report.

In the 700,000 US dollars and relief supplies that were collected from members of the diplomatic corps in Tanzania and business community on Tuesday to aid the survivors of the earthquake, The Chinese embassy pledged 50,000 US dollars and Chinese companies doing business in the East African nation pledged 70,000 US dollars.

The collected funds have been used to buy tents, food and medicines that were transported to Kagera region for assistance.

The Chinese doctors are expected to have arrived late Wednesday or Thursday morning, according to the statement.

An earthquake, measuring at a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale, hit the Tanzania’s Kagera region on Saturday.  At least 17 people have been confirmed dead and over 200 injured as thousands of houses got damaged.
