Egypt’s parliament approves law introducing 13% value-added tax

Egypt’s Parliament has approved a long-awaited law introducing value-added tax of 13 percent.

This is set to further increase to 14 percent in the next fiscal year. Parliament had been debating the legislation for weeks. The VAT will replace the current sales tax, which economists maintain creates market distortions.
