Gabon boasts of rich lingual diversity despite small population
Gabon, a country along the Atlantic coast of Equatorial Africa, is made up of a population of just around 1.6 million people, but still boasts of a rich lingual diversity.
Being a colony of France, the country’s people majorly use French in their day-to-day activities. The language is also mandatory in schools in the country.
There are however other indigenous ethnic languages used in the country, for instance Estuaire, Haut Ogooué, Moyen Ogooué, Ngounié, Nyanga, Ogooué-Ivindo, Ogooué-Lolo, Ogooué-Maritime and Woleu Ntem.
Most Gabonese people speak at least two languages one of which is almost often French.
Others can speak as many as five languages fluently.
The French culture is quite well infiltrated in Gabon, and can be easily seen on the influence of the French architecture on the country’s buildings.
Gabon will have a chance to showcase her culture and many talents in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament that will take place in January.
