South Africa’s former Eskom MD found guilty of fraud

Former managing director of Eskom, Dawid Johannes Malherbe, has been found guilty of fraud and money laundering in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crimes Court following an investigation by the Hawks.
Malherbe was convicted in June this year and had gone on trial after a whistleblower flagged irregularities in the company’s tender awarding processes, police said at the time.
Malherbe was the power utility’s managing director between 2007 and 2009.
He had awarded tenders to his own company, Energy Utility Services (PTY) Ltd.
Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda said Malherbe resigned as soon as the allegations surfaced. Eskom’s losses were calculated to be around R65m and the Asset Forfeiture Unit had recovered around R10m through the attachment of his assets.
A second accused, who was not named, was granted immunity from prosecution after agreeing to testify against Malherbe.
Malherbe will be sentenced in August
