The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to vote today on the deployment of a 4000-strong regional force to South Sudan despite strong opposition from the government.
According to the BBC, this vote may however be delayed as negotiations continue over a draft resolution presented by the US.
China, Russia and Egypt were concerned about the US proposal to deploy troops without the backing of President Salva Kiir’s government.
The world’s youngest nation descended into fresh violence last month with forces loyal to President Kiir getting involved in gun battles with those loyal to Riek Machar.
Machar left the capital with his troops and was later sacked by Kiir, the second time this happened.
Close to 300 people were killed in the fighting that displaced around 40,000 others.
