South Africa’s hopes of progression shattered after heart-breaking loss to Denmark
South Africa is on the brink of elimination from the Olympics football tournament in Rio de Janeiro after falling to a 1-0 loss to group toppers Denmark in their second fixture.
Danish substitute Robert Skov got the all-important goal in the 69th minute to give the Africans their first taste of defeat at the Summer Games, one that may just get them eliminated from the competition.
The South Africans failed to convert their chances during a spell of dominance, meaning they now have to beat Iraq in their final group game, and hope that Denmark beats hosts Brazil, for them to qualify for the next round.
South Africa started their campaign in a high note, frustrating Brazil to a goalless draw despite playing most of the game with one man less.
Their joy was however short-lived, and they now have to ensure they win their final group game to give themselves a chance of progression.
They play Iraq on Wednesday.
